In Svay Rieng’s Trapeang Sdau Commune, farmer and young father Hem Chetra has emerged as a local leader, working alongside Commune Agricultural Officer (CAO) Sorn Sary to introduce synchronised cultivation—a method where farmers grow and harvest the same rice variety at the same time. Recognizing the need for stronger market linkages, Sary and Chetra organized a producer group that united farmers, giving them greater bargaining power and better access to buyers.
The results were immediate and significant. In October 2024, the group sold 20.5 tons of Krasaing Teab rice collectively at a higher price than usual, earning an additional $333. Just weeks later, they sold 28 tons of IR ML202 rice, again at an improved price, securing an extra $350. Beyond financial improvements, the initiative has fostered unity, resilience, and a renewed sense of possibility among farmers.
