Healthy Soils for Healthy Plants

In Anlong Veng Commune, Commune Agricultural Officer (CAO) Chhoeun Chhailin is tackling the pressing issue of soil depletion caused by years of continuous cassava cultivation for export. Drawing on her agricultural studies and her training by MAFF, she promotes a balanced approach of mixing organic and chemical fertilizers to restore soil health and boost yields. Farmers like Mrs. Niv Kim have already seen remarkable results, with cassava production rising from 30 to 40 tons per hectare after adopting Chhailin’s methods.

Beyond her direct agricultural guidance, Chhailin actively supports local innovation. She has supported Ta Yom, a small entrepreneur producing seed starting soil from rice husk biochar, cow dung, and compost. This locally produced soil has reduced reliance on costly imports from Thailand while improving crop results for growers. By promoting organic inputs, local entrepreneurship, and environmentally friendly farming, Chhailin is building a more resilient agricultural community.
